Social Security Inconsistency
By Joyce | November 8, 2007
A few weeks ago the Social Security Administration announced that the monthly Social Security benefit will increase a whopping 2.3% starting January, 2008. Wow! Knock yourself out on that one. This means that, actually, for those of us who’s sole income is Social Security, we will be living on less than we did last year. The reason being, higher costs in proportion to our increase. State of the Economy - Econ 101
By Joyce | November 5, 2007
Well, are we surprised? The stock market fell more than 360 points today after reacting to the news that our economy is slowing down (duh!). And, the price of oil passed $96 a barrel overnight for the first time ever. Correct me if I am wrong, but haven’t most of us average citizens of the good ol’ U.S. of A. been aware that something is a bit off kilter with the current economic picture for quite some time? A Woman’s Right to Stumble
By Joyce | November 3, 2007
Oh my little liberal heart! I’ve certainly been hearing a lot more Hillary bashing in the last week following the Democratic debate. To hear it told, you would have to believe that Hillary Rodham Clinton was standing in line on Halloween, passing out driver’s licenses to all the good little immigrant children hollering “trick or treat” as they flocked across the border in their Mexican and Islamic costumes . Sock Creatures Unite!
By Joyce | October 31, 2007
Several weeks ago a friend of mine stopped over with a gift. She had been out of town for a while and she brought me a present from her travels . . . It was a book by John Murphy called “Stupid Sock Creatures.” On the cover there are these two crazy looking stuffed sock animals that look more like Giuliani look-alikes from outer space than the typical kind of cozy little Beanie Baby pets that you are probably more familiar with. My friend knows that I am financially strapped and she thought I might want to explore making these quirky little figures for Christmas presents this year. Read more
“Barrel Roles” - Cheney’s Yo-Yo Tricks
By Joyce | October 27, 2007
I just don’t get it! As much as I try to figure out the rationale for the up and down prices that we are paying at the gas pumps this year, I’m starting to believe that the Bush administration and OPEC are doing nothing more than price gouging and yo-yo tricks to determine what consumers must pay to fill up their gas tanks. Seeking a Purpose: Baby Boomers are Ready to Volunteer
By Joyce | October 25, 2007
A recent study conducted by the Denver-based Rose Community Foundation surveyed people ages 55 to 65 to learn how they viewed their futures and what they planned to do once they reached retirement age. According to the published findings, one-third of the respondents said they were most interested in advocacy volunteer work, particularly work focused on neighborhood and children’s issues. Further, most of the respondents indicated that, mainly because of economic necessity, they intended to continue working after they reached retirement. Chief among their concerns - healthcare. The Sally Field Strategy - Conflicting Drug Interests
By Joyce | October 21, 2007
Have you noticed lately that there are an increasing number of drug ads on television? Every ailment from erectile dysfunction, herpes and menstrual pain to hypertension and depression has it’s media representative. Take a look at the star power that is currently pitching prescription drugs for the pharmaceutical companies: Sally Fields, Rob Lowe, Dorothy Hamill and even ex-senator Bob Dole have their pet drug promotions. In 2005, alone, the pharmaceutical companies spent more than $4.23 billion in direct-to-consumer advertising for prescription drugs - a 400 percent increase from 1996. Read more
Babyboomer Outing
By Joyce | October 20, 2007
Lately I’ve been reading a lot of articles about baby boomers and how us “aging hipsters” are viewed by many in the marketing industry as this wave of senior citizens who are about to flood the healthcare and social security systems en masse. If you believe everything you read, we are all self-absorbed ex-hippies who were born immediately following World War II and were raised on Campbell’s soup, watched the Mickey Mouse Club, and are responsible for every social ill that befalls those that have followed us. Cholesterol Confusion
By Joyce | October 19, 2007
I am so damn confused! As some of you already know, for the past month or so I have been on a mission to reduce my cholesterol levels. My last visit to the family physician was pretty pathetic. Not only was he amused because of my miss-matched socks, but he actually guffawed (and trust me . . . that is exactly what it sounded like) when I said that I would rather try to reduce my cholesterol numbers by changing my eating behavior versus taking another prescription drug. I don’t know what it is about our current healthcare professionals but it seems like I never leave their office anymore without another hand-written order for more medicine. I even have a new prescription for my lack of sunlight….. Technically, I could lock myself up in a dark closet and as long as I took my mega dose of Vitamin D, who would need the solar light?
